1 (who?)
Alone in the country, a dark southern night
headlights stumbling through the misty gray
I saw a figure in the road, and stopped—
though the black pressed against my eyes
I squinted, and though the shape was dim
there was a man on the road, and my heart fell.

I threw open the door, and running almost fell
against the chill of that bitter, awful night
to his side, the suggestion of blood in dim
outline—his skin was a whispering gray
and as I turned him over, opened his eyes!
A horror grabbed my heart, and made it stop.

No human ever looked at me so, the pupils stopped
in transfixing gaze; my soul tumbled and fell
and against it was helpless. I knew my eyes
wide with fear, were trapped in a monster’s night
and a monster’s ploy in the new moon’s gray
to prey upon the kind, their cautions (through pity) dimmed.

My memory of that night grows dim
even as I remember with hesitating breath, stopped
by fear and the road-man’s fingers gray.
There were no stories ever told to warn me, from the fell
swoop that upon my intentions fed that night
and from the wondering terror of his open eyes.

They found my car, seen by an early farmer’s eyes
in a morning foggy and through cold dimmed
it’s battery murdered by the long hours of the night.
They could only say that my body stopped
upon the side of the road, though how I fell
they could not say—my skin a shade of whispering gray.

Now forever, with the road-man whose soul is gray
I pierce the dark with ne’er closed eyes
and with him dance, dance, in the light that falls
from a cold moon that for us is never dimmed--
his heart by time and darkness stopped
was yearning, yearning through an ageless night.

Oh gray horror that my blood-stream dimmed!
Oh eyes that took a precious spark, and stopped!
You felled me in the dark, cursed Halloween night.

This is my first attempt at a sestina--and it was hard! But I have to admit, it was loads of fun to try, even if it turned out to be kind of awkward. :XD:

This is for :iconfllnthblnk:'s Sestina-Ween contest! Wish me luck! :D

EDIT: I fixed the tercet so that it is, in fact, a tercet. Many thanks to ~timeraider for pointing out my mistake! :]

I think this particular contest is very strict on the form. A sestina should only have 39 lines: six sextets followed by one tercet.

O.O Oh noes! I misinterpreted the directions; I see what I did. :D Thanks for pointing it out--do you think I can still fix it?

Yes, the contest doesn't end for awhile.
